Discovering Pune’s Rich Heritage: A Walk-Through Time curated by Dr. Chetan Sahasrabudhe, Professor, BNCA Pune

Participants had the opportunity to experience the soul of Pune with an enriching heritage walk led by the conservation architect and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) member Dr. Chetan Sahasrabudhe. On 22nd December, CAPABLE participants along with Dr. Mohan Siriwardena UK Principal CO-Investigator, Dr. Vaishali Anagal, Indian CO-Investigator gathered at Vishrambaug Wada at 8:30 AM to embark on a journey through the city’s vibrant past, culminating at Mandai at 2:00 PM. This walk was conducted as part of the CAPABLE Capacity Building in Built Environment Sustainability Research (CAPABLE) program.
The walk commenced at the magnificent Vishrambaug Wada, a masterpiece of Maratha architecture. Once the luxurious residence of Peshwa Bajirao II, this grand structure stands as a testament to Pune’s regal past. As Dr. Sahasrabudhe narrated the stories of the Peshwas, participants were transported back in time, imagining the grandeur and strategic importance of this historic site.

The walk took the participants through the bustling streets of the old city, unveiling a fascinating mix of historical landmarks, ancient temples, and traditional markets. Along the way, they explored Shaniwar Wada – The iconic fortress that echoes the legacy of the Maratha Empire; Lal Mahal – The childhood home of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, rich in historical significance; Kasba Ganpati – Pune’s presiding deity and an essential part of the city’s cultural fabric; Tulshibaug – A vibrant market known for its traditional wares and intricate temple structures.
The walk concluded at Mandai, Pune’s historic marketplace, a hub of activity and heritage. The magnificent structure, built during the British era, still thrives as the heart of the city’s trade. Here, participants experienced the essence of Pune’s cultural and economic history, completing a journey filled with knowledge, nostalgia, and a deeper appreciation for the city’s roots.

The heritage walks in Pune and Mumbai, led by Chetan Sir and Sharvey Sir, were an insightful journey through the layered histories of both cities. Their deep knowledge and engaging storytelling brought each site to life, revealing nuances often overlooked in our everyday surroundings. Experiencing these cities alongside students from the UK enriched the walks with fresh perspectives and thought-provoking discussions. I am truly grateful for this experience under the CAPABLE program.
