The Orientation Day marked the commencement of the India phase of the prestigious Capacity Building in Built Environment Sustainability Research (CAPABLE) program. Held from December 19th to December 30th, 2024, this phase concluded successfully, representing a key milestone in the two-year collaboration between BNCA, IIT Bombay, Liverpool John Moores University (UK), and PCERF.
Funded by the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) and the Scheme for Promoting Academic and Research Collaborations (SPARC), the program aims to advance sustainability in the built environment through an interdisciplinary approach.

The Orientation Day began with a welcome address by Dr. Vaishali Anagal, India Co-investigator, followed by inspiring remarks by Dr. Anurag Kashyap, Principal of BNCA. Dr. Amruta Garud, CAPABLE BNCA Coordinator, introduced the project investigators, highlighting their roles and expertise. A detailed briefing on the day-wise BNCA training schedule was delivered by Dr. Vaishali Anagal, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the program structure and objectives. Dr. Anupa Manewa, the UK Principal Investigator, and Dr. Mohan Siriwardena, the UK Principal Co-Investigator, introduced themselves to all attendees during the orientation day.
The event also provided an interactive platform for participants to introduce themselves and engage in meaningful discussions, fostering collaboration and camaraderie. A prior knowledge test was conducted to assess participants’ baseline understanding of sustainability concepts. This test was designed as a benchmark to evaluate the program’s impact and participants’ learning outcomes at the conclusion of the two-year collaboration.
A Pune Construction Engineering Research Foundation (PCERF) representative, who are the industrial partners for the CAPABLE program, Dr. Udaykumar Pathak addressed the gathering, reaffirming the organization’s commitment to a sustainable built environment. They also expressed their willingness to support similar capacity-building programs in the future.

As part of the day’s activities, the international faculty and student participants were given a guided tour of the BNCA campus and its state-of-the-art labs. They explored the AR-VR lab, where Prof. Deva provided a detailed explanation of the cutting-edge hologram technology showcased during the session. Dr. Mohan Siriwardena, UK Principal CO-Investigator, also explored the Hologram lens and discussed various opportunities in built environment where it can be used.
The tour also included the fabrication lab, giving participants insights into advanced tools and technologies used in architectural research and practice. This interaction highlighted BNCA’s commitment to integrating innovation and technology into architectural education.

In the afternoon, Dr. Chetan Sahasrabuddhe conducted a captivating heritage walk, where participants and guests were guided to the Maharshi Karve Samadhi and Museum. This walk offered a unique opportunity to explore the historical significance of the site, providing cultural and architectural insights into the legacy of Maharshi Karve and the impact of his work on education and society. The day concluded with a refreshing high tea, leaving participants energized and excited for the days to come.
Following lunch, students gathered in Room 108 for an informal discussion on their research interests and potential collaboration opportunities. This session provided a relaxed setting for participants from the UK and India to connect and build rapport ahead of the week-long workshop.
