Workshop Overview

The two-day workshop on Sustainability and Green Buildings was successfully held at BNCA, Pune, on 26th & 27th December 2024 bringing together students from various prestigious institutions including BNCA Pune, IIT Bombay, and Liverpool John Moores University. This workshop, organized as part of the CAPABLE-India program, provided a comprehensive understanding of sustainable building practices, environmental architecture, and green building technologies. The workshop attracted a diverse group of participants, including students of architecture, environmental science, and sustainability from both Indian and international institutions.

The workshop was conducted by experts from academics and the profession including Dr. Sujata Karve, HOD, Environmental Architecture Department, BNCA; Dr. Prajakta Kulkarni, Expert in Passive Design & Renewable Energy, Ar. Sonali Rajwade, Architect & Sustainability Consultant, Ar. Namrata Dhamankar, Architect specializing in Energy Efficiency and Indoor Environmental Quality and Mr. Hrishikesh Manjarekar, Vice Chairman, IGBC Pune.

Workshop Sessions

Day 1: 26th December 2024

Introduction to Green Building Rating Systems, Codes, and Standards
Facilitator: Dr. Sujata Karve

An introduction to the various green building rating systems such as LEED, GRIHA, and IGBC, highlighting the international and national standards that guide sustainable building design.

Passive Design Techniques
Facilitator: Dr. Prajakta Kulkarni

A session focused on passive design strategies that maximize natural resources for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Sustainable Sites and Water Management
Facilitator: Ar. Sonali Rajwade

This session discussed strategies for site selection, landscape design, and water management techniques that conserve natural resources with case studies.

Materials
Facilitator: Ar. Sonali Rajwade

Understanding the importance of sustainable materials and how material choices can contribute to the overall sustainability of a building. She presented numerous case studies.

Day 2: 27th December 2024

Energy Efficiency
Facilitator: Ar. Namrata Dhamankar

A session focusing on techniques and technologies that improve energy efficiency in buildings, reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

Renewable Energy
Facilitator: Dr. Prajakta Kulkarni

A deep dive into the application of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power in green building designs.

Indoor Environmental Quality
Facilitator: Ar. Namrata Dhamankar

This session covered strategies to enhance the indoor environmental quality of buildings, focusing on air quality, lighting, and thermal comfort.

Interactive Session with Mr. Hrishikesh Manjarekar
Facilitator: Dr. Sujata Karve

An engaging conversation with Mr. Hrishikesh Manjarekar, Vice Chairman of IGBC Pune, who shared insights on the practical implementation of green building principles, challenges in construction and maintenance of green rated buildings and the future of sustainable architecture.

The workshop offered in-depth knowledge of green building principles, including passive design techniques, energy efficiency, and the use of sustainable materials. It offered exposure to international and national green building rating systems and their importance in sustainable construction. The key take-away included an understanding of the integration of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies into building designs and insight into real-world applications and case studies from experienced industry professionals.
