“Adaptable Buildings for Circular Economy” by Dr. Robert Schmidt III, Professor, Loughborough University, UK.
This session will explore how adaptable architecture contributes to achieving circular economy goals, enhancing longevity, resource efficiency, and resilience in the built environment.
The event is organized under the CAPABLE initiative, in collaboration with IIT Bombay, Liverpool John Moores University (UK), BNCA Pune, and PCERF, and is funded by SPARC and UKIERI-British Council.
Presentation Synopsis:
We adapt stuff all the time for our own needs. Yet when it comes to our products and buildings we often disregard them when they no longer fit their original purpose. However as we continue to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, how we adapt and restore value in our spaces and buildings becomes increasingly important to get further use out of them.
I want to focus our attention on the dynamic relationship between time and change and how we can conceptualise the way we think about the built environment to ease this shearing tension. To think about our buildings as temporal stores for our materials…to enable modular systems and non-destructive connections to reshape the human / space relationship. The presentation unpacks how we can use creativity, and our imagination coupled with our technical knowledge and an understanding of social values to craft our spaces for tomorrow.
